No more waste! Meet these biodegradable coffee pods

Is it necessary to give up on the convenience of coffee pods and return to the past? No! There are biodegradable coffee capsules compatible with the main machines on the market!

The accumulation of waste generated by coffee pods is so big that even their inventor has already declared that he regretted creating them. Manufacturers defend themselves against the accusations and invest in the collecting pods and treating its waste.

Recycling is complex, as most of the coffee pods are made of plastic or aluminum and the packaging must be separated from the coffee grounds, making recycling process even more difficult. And it is consumer’s responsibility to separate their capsules and take them to a disposable point. That is why there is this impasse regarding the destination of the waste.

Coffee brewed in a cloth filter: it is part of the past of most Brazilian adults

Only a third of the coffee capsules consumed in the world are recycled and that’s concerning, but there’s no need to go back to the past with your cloth filters.

A lot of innovation has been tested and is coming to market. One of those that has just hit the market is Dualit, which produces biodegradable coffee pods compatible with Nespresso machine. These pods are degradable in up to 90 days when taken to industrial compost (conventional plastic takes more than 100 years to degrade). Coffee, of course, is fairtrade and organic, after all it has to be environmentally and socially sustainable as well.
